12 Dec 2024 Autumn Term Write-Up!
A proud moment for us this term was winning the ‘Welcoming Award‘ at the National Insight Awards 2024. This honour celebrates our approach and means so much to everyone at Underground Lights.
We staged three performances of Who is Theatre For?, a production created and performed by our drama group members. These took place at Coventry Central Hall, the Belgrade Theatre’s Screen Room, and Harnall Lifehouse. More than 70 audience members attended, including many who rarely have the chance to experience live theatre.
As part of this project, we conducted outreach activities, including a workshop at Harnall Lifehouse with individuals experiencing homelessness. We also engaged with local residents through interviews and surveys to learn about their views and experiences with theatre.
To complement the performances, we produced a video featuring creative responses to the theme of Who is Theatre For?. The video received great feedback, and we’re excited to share it on YouTube soon!

Our final Open Mic of 2024 was a wonderful way to close the year. The audience loved “the way everyone supports each other so beautifully,” and praised the creative and well-performed responses to the theme of the seasons.
This term, we also hosted an engaging online workshop with the Recovery Academy, exploring the theme of “Strength” through drama. One participant shared: “The collective creativity resulted in something truly inspiring. The facilitators brought out so much from us.” We’re excited about the possibility of collaborating with the Recovery Academy again in 2025!
Additionally, we contributed to Creatively Minded at the Theatre by David Cutler for the Baring Foundation.
At the start of the term our members enjoyed watching Revealed at the Belgrade Theatre and are eagerly looking forward to their next trip to see Dick Whittington, this year’s Christmas Pantomime.
